"Bloody Tears (Street-day time-BGM)" from Castlevania II: Simon's Quest on the Nintendo Entertainment System (1987)
Composer: Kenichi Matsubara
Album: Akumajo Dracula Famicom Best
Label: CGM Series, Konami
Publisher: Konami
Developer: Konami
I figured what better way to start off October than with the quintessential Castlevania classic, "Bloody Tears." I had two options for "Bloody Tears," and that was to use the music from either the Famicom version or the NES version, and since I first played the North American version, that was the one I went with. The NES version is a little less tinny than the Famicom sound chip, and the arrangement sounds a bit more aggressive than the mellow instrumentation of the original, but otherwise the melodies are the same.
Somewhat surprisingly, or maybe not, I couldn't find an interview with Kenichi Matsubara regarding his process for composing either "Bloody Tears" or any of the other songs he worked with Konami Kukeiha Club on. Only that he was likely a musician first and needed assistance programming his compositions into the Famicom/NES.
So that's "Bloody Tears," a classic of the Castlevania series for the last 38 years and hopefully longer if Konami ever decides to go back to this series.
