"Cry of the Ancients" from Dead Space 3 on PC, Xbox 360, & Playstation 3 (2013)
Composer: James Hannigan
Label: E.A.R.S.
Developer: Visceral Games
This might be a bit of an odd choice considering how much of the song doesn't contain a recognizable melody, but that is kind of the point with deciding to highlight this song. There's roughly 1:15 before there is any recognizable instrumentation and only by about 1:40 do the strings come in with a driving sense of foreboding. This is Dead Space after all.
What I like about "Cry of the Ancients" is how much of the song does in fact feel like there is something bad coming, but at least for me, the very quiet note from the piano (I think it's the piano anyway) at 2:27 offers the first sign that there is a sign of hope. That little bit of hope comes to fruition around the 3:15 mark. I also like the fact that the title of the song doesn't really give much away about the story, which is why I didn't choose some of the other songs composed by Mr. Hannigan.
Overall, this song I feel reflects the overall tone of this game in a franchise in limbo.
