MIDI Week Singles: "Chill Penguin Stage" - Mega Man X (SNES)

"Chill Penguin Stage" from Mega Man X on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (1993)
Composer: Yuki Iwai
Label: Suleputer
Publisher: Capcom
Developer: Capcom

This month we are focusing our musical selections on wintry vibes and nothing says winter better than an army of cold lifeless robots trying to kill you while you trudge, shoot, slide, and blast your way through shin-deep snow.  "Chill Penguin Stage" on its own is a pretty great song, and coupled with that is that it is a great song from a Mega Man game.  Then, on top of all of that, is that to me the music conveys cold, winter, snow, and death from an unhappily stationed robot.  I also found it interesting that this was the only song that Yuki Iwai composed for Mega Man X, with most of the music being composed by Setuo Yamamoto, but that it fits so well with the music composed for the rest of the stages, I just find impressive.

The opening has a higher-pitched tone that you find a lot in snow levels, often associated with ice, or at least that is how I associate it.  I am only a little saddened that there were not any bells incorporated into the song, but the high-hat at 0:14 does have a bell-like feel to it, but that could just be my wishful thinking.

You know what, I just really like this song, and the fact that this is a combination of good video game music, good Mega Man music, and good Winter music warranted that it be shared this month.
