Show Review: Lore Season 2

I realize this might be a bit out of season, but oh well.  Victorian era Christmas traditions included telling ghost stories, so take that!

Last year when Conklederp and I heard that the Amazon Prime series Lore, based on the podcast of the same name, would be receiving a second season, we were both very excited.  Having been listener's of the often spooky historical non fiction tales retold by writer and podcaster Aaron Mahnke, the first season of the show had a lot of what we loved about the podcast.  There was an introduction into the story by Aaron Mahnke followed by a reenactment of those events with occasional interjections by Mr. Mahnke throughout the episode.  Season 2 of Lore, on the other hand, is not exactly what we were expecting, and not all for the better.

The biggest difference between the two seasons, is that Season 2 does not have any narration by Aaron Mahnke.  His name is listed in the closing credits as "Based on the podcast by Aaron Mahnke."  The stories might be similar, but there is a lot of the dark charm that A.M. brings to the histories that he is telling.  It really felt like, to me at least, that Amazon took the name and concept behind the Lore podcast and what was done in Season 1, put all of their budget into the production (actors, costumes, music, directors, writers), but left A.M. out of the rest.

What Lore Season 2 feels like, is just another historical reenactment series about creepy events.

It is actually kind of hard to write more about the series, partly because Conklederp and I stopped watching about 1/3rd of the way through the fourth episode and have had not much motivation about finishing the season.  We love the podcast, and the first season was a great first season of a show based on a podcast, but the second season has not been nearly as interesting.  What it almost seems like is that Amazon only listened to the people who have made complaints about A.M.'s voice and his meter of speaking, then recreated the show around historical reenactments.

All of that being said, I would like Amazon to do a 3rd Season, but take everything they did right in the first season, with the production value they injected into the second season, and make an amazing 3rd season.
